Men’s Sheds are about promoting men’s health, in particular social, emotional, and mental health. The congenial and friendly environment of a Shed enables older males to interact with their peers and discuss day-to-day events while creating something with their hands. Woodwork is simply the catalyst
for bringing men together.

In a community Shed men can pursue their hobbies and pastimes, and spend time with other blokes with similar interests. New members get to learn new skills, use tools for the first time—or keep old skills honed and productive. The feeling of ‘usefulness’ is reinforced by contributing to community needs— whilst also creating projects of personal interest and expertise. As well as encouraging new friendships, the Men’s Shed also provides access to other networks for men including local activities and men’s health information.

The Lane Cove Community Men’s Shed possesses a wide range of hand, power and machine tools for serious woodworking. We recently took delivery of upgraded machines which are safer and easier to use. Refer to the Photo Gallery (link) page to see some of our past interesting and challenging projects.

Lane Cove Community Men’s Shed has occupied the same 82 square metre space in Fig Tree Street, Lane Cove since its inception 28 years ago. Working space is extremely limited and an alternative, larger site is being sought. This is required in order for the Shed to function sustainably and meet its community objectives.

At present, we regretfully turn away people expressing an interest to join our Shed. We receive enquiries about whether we have a metalwork workshop. It would be great to have the space to install craft machines such as 3D printers and computer numerical control (CNC) milling machines.

A larger Shed would enable a wider variety of work to be undertaken. For example – metalwork, leatherwork, electronics, laser cutting and printing. Operating sustainably will continue to be one of our key tenets

The current leadership team wish to grow the membership base and offer the many benefits that a Men’s Shed offers to an increased number of older Lane Cove residents.
